URL syntax for hyperlinks

Basic principles

The basic principle of hyperlinking to an online dictionary involves using a new URL syntax. This enables users to access a dictionary entry by querying the search engine through an Internet address.

Use

The new URL syntax allows you to insert hypertext links into your documents on words or expressions that you want to link directly to the corresponding dictionary entry. This provides a simple way to access the dictionary.

To insert a link, simply use the standard HTML syntax with the <A> tag; for example, to create a link to Le Petit Robert:

  • <A href="https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=mot">texte</A> to access the word in Le Petit Robert in the same window.
  • <A href="https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=mot" target="_blank">texte</A> to access the word in Le Petit Robert, in a new browser window (or a new tab, if the browser supports tabs)

Example of enriched text with hyperlinks to Le Petit Robert:

The French language is alive and well, which is why every year our lexicographers selected a number of new words and senses to go into Le Petit Robert.
This year has seen another good crop:
IT and new technologies are a regular source of neologisms (blogosphère, identifiant, audiolivre, baladodiffusion…) .
The world of sport has seen the arrival of acrosport, glaciériste, paintball, mercato and we also noted the 'rugby effect' (haka, ascenseur, etc.).

You can also reference the dictionary in an HTML page from any sentence of text, or even from an image, for example:

[...] comme le mentionne l'étymologie du Petit Robert, le mot apocalypse signifie "révélation" en grec [...]

Example of enriched text with hypertext links to Robert & Collins :

As two spent swimmers that do cling together
And choke their art. The merciless Macdonwald,-
Worthy to be a rebel,- for to that
The multiplying villainies of nature
Do swarm upon him, - from the Western isles
Of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied;
William Shakespeare, Macbeth, acte I, scène 1.

How to create links

The syntax, while very simple, depends of course on the dictionary being used:

Petit Robert

Le Petit Robert [https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/] uses this URL syntax

https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=mot to search for a word or an inflected form (feminine, plural, conjugated verb)

For example:

https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=heureuses looks for the form heureuses in the index of inflected forms, which leads to the entry heureux, euse

If you would like to test the hyperlinking functions but do not have access to the full online version, you are welcome to use the demo version [https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/demo], with the same syntax.

The demo version only includes the letter N from Le Petit Robert, and so this will only give meaningful results on words beginning with N. For example:

https://petitrobert.lerobert.com/demo/?forme=noires

Petit Robert de la langue française et des noms propres

Le Petit Robert de la langue française et des noms propres [https://petitrobert12.lerobert.com/] uses this URL syntax

https://petitrobert12.lerobert.com/?forme=mot to search for a word or an inflected form (feminine, plural, conjugated verb)

For example:

https://petitrobert12.lerobert.com/?forme=heureuses looks for the form heureuses in the index of inflected forms, which leads to the entry heureux, euse

If you would like to test the hyperlinking functions but do not have access to the full online version, you are welcome to use the demo version [https://petitrobert12.lerobert.com/demo], with the same syntax.

The demo version only includes the letter N from Le Petit Robert de la langue française et des noms propres, and so this will only give meaningful results on words beginning with N. For example:

https://petitrobert12.lerobert.com/demo/?forme=noires

Grand Robert

Le Grand Robert [https://grandrobert.lerobert.com/] uses this URL syntax::

https://grandrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=mot to search for a word or an inflected form (feminine, plural, conjugated verb)

For example:

https://grandrobert.lerobert.com/?forme=heureuses looks for the form heureuses in the index of inflected forms, which leads to the entry heureux, euse

Grand Robert & Collins (GRC)

For the Grand Robert & Collins [https://grc.lerobert.com/], two URL syntaxes may be used, depending on which interface language is preferred:

https://grc.lerobert.com/?mot=mot to search for a word or an expression (sequence of words), in the French interface
https://grc.lerobert.com/?word=mot to search for a word or an expression (sequence of words), in the English interface

For example:

https://grc.lerobert.com/?mot=joie to search for a word or an expression (sequence of words), in the French interface
https://grc.lerobert.com/?word=sorrow to search for a word or an expression (sequence of words), in the English interface

Important points:

  • You can type a French or English word in any of its inflected forms (conjugated verb, feminine, plural):  curieuse, conduisons... hidden, babies, linked...
  • You can search directly for an expression, a compound noun, etc., just as you would do in the main search box in the GRC: en travers, agent de change, gagner du temps... give away, credit card...

If you would like to test the hyperlinking functions but do not have access to the full online version, you are welcome to use the demo version  [https://grc.lerobert.com/demo], with the same syntax.

The demo version only includes the letter A from the Robert & Collins, and so this will only give meaningful results on words beginning with A. For example:

https://grc.lerobert.com/demo/?mot=agiles

https://grc.lerobert.com/demo/?mot=act of god

https://junior.lerobert.com/hyperappel.asp?mot=moyenage to search for a word or an inflected form (feminine, plural, conjugated verb) or a proper noun (the name of a person, country, city or region) or a historical period.

For example:

https://junior.lerobert.com/hyperappel.asp?mot=moyenage searches for the form Moyen Âge in the index of proper nouns, which leads to the entry Moyen Âge.

Note: hyperlinks to compound words such as pomme de terre, petit pois ou Belle Époque are not supported in either of these dictionaries

https://robertillustre.lerobert.com/?mot=mot to search for a word or an inflected form (feminine, plural, conjugated verb) or a proper noun (the name of a person, country, city or region) or a historical period.
