Basic principles
The hyperlinking function for the online dictionaries is based on a URL syntax (address), allowing you to look up a word in the dictionary by typing an Internet address that queries the search engine. This syntax is described in detail in the 'URL Syntax for Hyperlinks' section.
Once available, this syntax makes it straightforward to build various tools that enable simplified dictionary searches from external sources and in any context of use. This greatly simplifies the process of using the dictionary, as there is no need to visit the dictionary webpage, open it, and type the word in the usual search box.
Browser windows
This hyperlinking functionality always results in a word being looked up in the online dictionary. The search result opens in a new browser tab or window, where the user can see the dictionary entry for the word and access the complete dictionary interface with all its features for further searches.
In most cases it is preferable to avoid opening a new browser window each time a word is looked up. Whenever possible, the hyperlinking function will use an already open window, which speeds up the search process by avoiding the need to reload the dictionary interface each time.
Compatibility
Hyperlinking functions and modules are compatible with all standard browsers. The following are generally guaranteed to be compatible:
- Internet Explorer (IE)
- Firefox PC and Mac
- Mac Safari
- Google Chrome
- Opera
Some features, such as search engine integration, are only available for certain browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome).
Sessions
Every search using the hyperlink function connects to your online session. Since there is a limit on the number of simultaneous accesses, be careful not to open multiple new windows, as you may reach the access limit. An error message will notify you if the limit has been exceeded.
However, if you consult the dictionary through a subscription taken out by a university, organization or company, access is not restricted to a certain number of users.
